designed to keep butter soft and fresh at room temperature the French style butterdish is used by placing an inch or so of water in the base, and then butter is packed into the lid. when the lid is placed on the base it creates an air tight seal between the water and butter keeping the butter fresh and spreadable (water needs to be changed out every few days, avoid crumbs in the butter as they will cause it to spoil)
